A Study on Health Status and Quality of Life in Living alone Elderly

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between health status and quality of life. The data were collected from 124 living alone elderly in Seoul from October, 2000 to June, 2001. Health status were measured by ADL, nutritional status and quality of life were measured by cognitive function and depression.
The data were analyzed using the SPSS program by frequency, percentiles, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe test, Pearson correlation coefficient and Stepwise multiple regression.
The results were as follows:
1. The mean score for ADL was 24.12; for nutritional status was 7.70; for MMSE-K was 26.25; for depression was 7.30.
2. The score of ADL was positively correlated with the score of nutritional status and MMSE-K and negatively correlated with depression. Also nutritional status were negatively correlated with depression.
3. The factors influencing depression were ADL, the number of children, and disease. The three factors explained 23.2% of the variance of depression.
4. ADL was significantly different by age, educational level, monthly income, and residential type; nutritional status by age, marital status, monthly income; MMSE-K by age, marital status, educational level, monthly income, residental type; depression by the number of children, monthly income, and disease
